WABChats – Nicola Stevens, Head of Operations

WAB would not be the place it is without our people. In WABChats, we talk to some of our team and find out more about the people behind the firm. Whether they’re giving expert advice to clients or running essential business services, our team members’ varied backgrounds, skills and expertise make WAB what it is.

First up, we chat to Nicola Stevens, who has recently become Head of Operations!

How did you end up with a career in the law? Did you have to do qualifications?

“Having completed my A ‘Levels, I decided that University wasn’t something that I wanted to do and I got a job as a Legal Secretary in a local law firm.  I worked in various departments as a Legal Secretary for many years including Crime & Immigration, Commercial, Professional Regulatory, Litigation, Insolvency and Family law.

I really enjoyed this role and I have dipped in and out of it at different stages of my life. I undertook the Chartered Institute of Legal Executive route to become a lawyer while working full time as legal secretary, qualifying as a Fellow on the Chartered Institute in 2012, specialising in Litigation and Debt Recovery. I then went back to a legal secretary role, before moving to WAB last year to become Executive Assistant to our CEO.”

Can you describe a bit about what you do for WAB?

“When I started at WAB late last year as EA, the role focused more on organising and assisting our CEO and Partners, helping them with the different elements of running the business. Most recently through our office move and managing our new facilities and practical operational set-up.

I’m also leading some big operational projects including a review and planned migration of our current IT and management systems with the focus on improving processes internally and externally for the benefit of our clients and our people. What’s great is that the firm is in a really exciting period of growth at the moment and my role has grown with it and I’m really excited about my recent progression in the Head of Operations position.”

WAB’s 2022 Summer Party

What excites you most about working for WAB?

“I really enjoy working at WAB! Its hard to pick just one thing out but I particularly like the culture that we have around developing, nurturing, and progressing our existing talent pool. This nurturing and care for my professional development is something I’ve experienced myself and its allowed me to grow and develop my role massively! I’m really excited to see where the culture will take me and my colleagues!”

Are there any areas of your role that you specialise or would like to specialise in?

“WAB are really encouraging and fully support me as I fill in the gaps in my knowledge, I actually recently completed short project management and HR courses. I’m aware that I still have a lot to learn and I’ve got more exciting training opportunities coming up!

In the future, I particularly like the idea of focusing on innovation in the way that we work as a firm. It is really interesting to see where technology is taking us and how that can be applied in legal practice. This is something that I am looking at as part of an ongoing project to continue developing our technology infrastructure and I’ll continue to explore this for the firm as we grow and as technology evolves.”

Nicola Stevens, Head of Operations

What do you do when you’re not heading up WAB’s OPs?

“Outside the office I have a really busy family life with two children (7 & 11) and a crazy black lab called Ralph – I spend time with my family and I like to read, shop and listen to music, especially Coldplay, who I’m actually going to see next summer in Cardiff which I can’t wait for! Its an absolute bucket list item!!”
