General Data Protection Regulation to apply from 25 May 2018

Following publication in the Official Journal of the European Union, we now have a date from which the GDPR will apply in all Member States.

In April we provided an update on the passage of the GDPR by the European Parliament, summarising its key terms.  The extensive changes, including vastly increased fines, extraterritorial effect and direct obligations for data processors, are to take direct effect in Member States two years and twenty days after the publication of the text in the Official Journal.  The final text, published on 4 May 2016, confirms that it will apply from 25 May 2018.

If you would like to discuss the effect of the reforms on your organisation, please contact our Data Protection specialists Nick MathysPhil Thompson and Nicholas Mitchell.
