Making the Complex Simple for Matchesfashion.com

Matchesfashion is a UK-based retailer of luxury fashion brands including Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Yves Saint Laurent and Isabel Marant. Established in 1990 by co-founders Tom and Ruth Chapman, the company has become an iconic brand in its own right and its London stores are patronised by some of UK’s most fashion literate clientele. Nine years ago, it launched its online presence and the site has become a truly unique online destination in luxury fashion retail. White & Black has advised on a number of investments, major contracts, debt and equity funding rounds, share option schemes and commercial projects – a broad range of legal advice to a highly tech-enabled client.

We’ve been on quite a journey together and I’ve never felt that I got the wrong advice. I can’t say that about some of the other lawyers I have worked with. I would definitely recommend them to other people.

Fiona Greiner, CFO, Matchesfashion.com

All engagements have their complications, especially when they involve a business that’s growing and evolving as fast as Matches. Each project involves new business partners,  different lawyers and fresh complexity.  Each time we need to establish the right objectives, team and structure that balances Matches’ commercial needs  with the legal and regulatory constraints they work within and, of course, the needs of the other party.

As Matches has developed, we’ve become an increasingly integrated part of their team, enabling us build a deep understanding of their legal and commercial needs.  It’s this understanding, at a commercial and legal level, which helps us provide consistently their successful outcomes. We have more than just a working partnership with Matches.  They know they can call on us at any time and in any way and that we’ll always be there to give advice, without them having to worry about the meter ticking.  They know that whatever they need, it will be done in a calm, professional and timely manner. We find that our experience, gained over many years working with high-growth businesses, means that what might be a one-off challenge for them is familiar to us.
